I reached the latest chapter and I seriously doubt I will continue to read further. The story's pacing was incredibly fast. The author told us the characters history, but not anything about the character himself. He has been raped and killed in 998 lives. He's already been raped (but but not killed) in his 999th and last life. He has little to no reaction to this other than a desire to survive and succeed. On one hand, I personally am glad the story doesn't dwell too much on an uncomfortable topic such as rape. On the other, I think that the blasé approach that sweeps the aftermath under the rug despite the author making the topic a major theme is unfortunately harming the story. MC has experienced so much trauma and abuse in every life yet seems to consider his past a minor annoyance. No character so far has any depth.
This shows most obviously in the main character. His personality shows no indication of his history. The author gave him an entire complex and long backstory, but left his personality as a cliche chinese cultivation protagonist.
Another odd aspect is how he seemed to be helpless in every life. Was he completely unable to come up with countermeasures? How were all the perps able to discover his furnace physique? Could he not find a way to hide it or learn ways to escape or quickly become strong enough to resist his enemies? It's 998 past lives worth of memory and experience. All gone to waste.
It's early so maybe he will show signs of PTSD or his strength from recalling so many lives later. Maybe he only regains his memory once it's too late to escape. Who knows and the author hasn't left me invested enough to find out. I focused so much on this aspect because neither the cultivation world or other characters have shown anything to set themselves apart from other stories yet. It's not terrible so far either, just shallow since the author is rushing through the first few chapters. I usually do not rate so early so I may come back to update my review later.
